“Referring doesn’t mean losing the case; it means giving the patient the best possible chance.”
You know that mid-surgery moment where your attention is split between the field in front of you and the corner of your eye on the monitor? The patient’s colour shifts a little, their pressure wavers, and you’re silently calculating how quickly you can place that next suture to adjust their fluids.
That’s the moment I live in.
As a specialist anaesthesiologist working with clinics across the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Brisbane, my role is simple on paper: run the anaesthetic. But in practice, it’s about giving you the headspace to do your best surgical work without a constant half-eye on the monitor.
If this is your first time referring to me, I’ll give you a quick run-through of what to expect, what I bring (equipment, drugs, monitoring), how I integrate with your team, and where we might need to adapt for your clinic setup.
I’ll also ask you to complete a quick clinic resource questionnaire, so I know exactly what extras to pack for that specific patient.
And here’s the thing: almost any patient can be referred.
If anaesthesia is a concern for any reason, clinical or personal, that’s my cue to step in.
“Referring doesn’t mean losing the case; it means giving the patient the best possible chance.”
Most do. But some patients need specialist facilities on hand in case of emergency, and part of my job is helping you make that call. Referring doesn’t mean you’ve “lost” the case. It means you’re giving your patient the environment and resources they need to come through safely.
When I’m in your clinic, I’m not just an observer – I’m an active part of your team, supporting your patient from start to finish. I’m constantly communicating, sharing readings, flagging changes before they happen, and fine-tuning the plan in real time.
If I’m managing the patient in another practice (for example, a referral hospital), my updates usually come via their staff, simply because, once I’m running anaesthetic, my full attention stays with that patient. But the goal’s always the same: keep you informed and confident in the plan.
Once I’m happy the patient is stable, comfortable, and safe in your team’s hands, I’ll give you a detailed handover. That includes drug protocols, monitoring notes, and recovery expectations, and I’m always just a phone call away if anything crops up post-op.
When vets and anaesthesia specialists work together, we:
And on a busy day, that partnership can turn anaesthesia from your biggest pressure point into your quiet advantage.
“While you focus on the surgery, I focus on keeping your patient exactly where they need to be.”
Think of it less as ‘handing over’ and more as bringing in a second set of hands dedicated entirely to keeping that patient as safe as possible. Working with vets throughout the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Brisbane, I’ve seen firsthand how much difference that extra layer of focus can make, not just to patient outcomes, but to how much smoother and less stressful your surgical day feels. As you close that last layer, I’m right there ensuring the patient wakes calm, comfortable, and stable, so you can stay fully focused on what you do best.

Referral is worth considering any time anaesthesia feels like the biggest risk factor in your case. That might be an elderly pet with multiple conditions, a brachycephalic breed, or a patient with a history of unstable anaesthetics. It can also be as simple as an owner who wants the reassurance of specialist-level monitoring. If anaesthesia is likely to add complexity or stress, that’s the point where I can step in to support you and your patient.
Not at all. Referring for anaesthesia is about collaboration, not handover. You remain the primary vet or surgeon – I manage the anaesthetic so you can focus on your area of expertise. Once the procedure is complete and your patient is stable, I provide a full handover so your team can continue care seamlessly. Referring is an extension of your service, not a replacement.
Most practices already have the basics covered, but before I visit, I’ll ask you to complete a short clinic resource questionnaire. This helps me know exactly what you have on site, and what I should bring with me – from monitoring gear to specific drugs. I aim to integrate smoothly into your theatre without disrupting your usual workflow.
When I’m in the theatre, I function as a hands-on member of your team. I manage the anaesthetic plan, monitor the patient minute by minute, and communicate any changes in real time. That means you can focus fully on the surgery, confident that the patient’s stability and comfort are my sole responsibility. This often makes procedures flow more smoothly and reduces stress for the whole team.
The more detail, the better. I’ll usually request the patient’s full history, including past anaesthetics, comorbidities, current medications, and any owner concerns. For complex cases, I may speak directly with you ahead of time to clarify risks and confirm a plan. This preparation means we confidently walk into the theatre, and you, the patient, and the owner all know precisely what to expect.
Owners often feel most anxious about the anaesthetic, especially if their pet is older or high-risk. Saying you have a veterinary anaesthesia specialist on hand can be a huge reassurance. It shows you are proactive, prioritise safety, and are prepared to bring in expertise when it matters. In practice, this can strengthen the trust between you and your client while giving their pet the best possible chance at a safe procedure.
“I cannot recommend Dr Kieren Maddern highly enough. She has cared for both of my tiny, health-compromised Pomeranians, who are high risk when it comes to anaesthesia. As a very anxious owner, the thought of putting them under is always stressful, but knowing Dr Kieren is in control makes all the difference.”
“Working with Kieren brings a sense of calm and confidence to even the most complex cases. With her managing anaesthesia, we can focus entirely on dentistry, knowing every detail of patient safety is being handled with care and precision.”
“Kieren shares our passion for cats. Her specialist training and knowledge allowed us to safely pursue treatments that required anaesthesia in a manner that ensured the utmost safety for Mr Gibbs. Her level of planning, communication, and care was extraordinary.“
